I was about twenty so that was about nineteen-sixty two and I had upgraded my very old Ford popular to what I considered a dream of a car.

It was a four-year old Triumph Herald which I saw in a local garage and I knew that I had to have it.

The car was light blue, the bonnet embraced the whole of the front of the car and could be lifted up so that all whole of the engine was exposed. The windows had no frame around them.

it was a sunny day in the middle of summer Even now I can remember looking through the side window at the milometer. it was round with clear number’s which registered 14000 miles and I thought wow.

All logic disappeared and despite having little money I bought it with a loan from the garage.

Over the next few months I fitted an instrument console between the two front seats and crammed as many switches and dials into it as I could, many were never connected up but they looked great.

Then I would cruise around in it with one of my best friends Joey France of italian deccent with thick black hair and who was far better looking than I was trying and failing in most cases to pick up girls.

But this was American Graffiti before I knew it existed and how I loved that car and where it took me in life.

When I was an apprentice at BIP Tool in Birmingham the UK around 1960 there was a another lad two years younger (I was eighteen) his name was Ken Stallard and he was one of the clumsiest people I have ever met but with what I thought was a very strong upper body.

If he walked from one part of the factory to another he walked through things rather than around them.

I left and never saw him for fifty years until there was a BIP reunion at a local club and a man came up to me and said hello Dave It was Ken but how he had changed he moved across the floor like an athlete.

‘You look so different you were so clumsy when I first met you (you will notice that I have no finesse with words or people ) ‘That’s because I started dancing lessons’ he replied, ‘and found out that I was really good at it, I have lots of cups and medals at home and all the girls loved me.’

Its obvious that I would never be any good as a talent Scout.

Len Gab started on the same section of die milling machine that I was serving my apprenticeship on and while I was twenty he was around forty five, a well built man with dark hair that was receding.

He was a nice person and quite outgoing but nothing unusual until one day he started singing and everone stopped and looked at him.

He had the most amazing voice and would sing all the great classic operatic songs.

Allen Ranking was not good in the mornings, he could be charming but not if he was in a bad mood.

One day Ken Stallard said the wrong thing to him and Allen put one hand under his neck and lifted him up in the air and held him against a brick wall,

Surprising because Allen was not as tall as Ken.

When Allen was forty and he walked into the factory no one said happy birthday to him. He never wanted to get old, and they all wanted to live.

Sometimes people aren’t what they appear to be and most can tell some very unusual stories, but you just have to ask and then listen

At the moment its the mess created in the UK by the collective intellectuals who are in charge of the education system and relied on a computer derived system to assess the grades of teenagers who spent a year studying intently in an effort to obtain their dreams and which turned into a nightmare.

I could have told them not to trust a computer they watch you all the time and there is a blank expression on their screens . well at least on mine.

And I will give all the people in the world this bit of advice; make sure that when you have a dream to aim for, make sure that its one that you can never obtain because once you achieve what you aspire too what else is there.

Mine was to live forever and I am three-quarters of the way there.

To get back on track

The Uk has an ever-expanding population and a climate that is getting much hotter so we will need more water and therefore more dams, bet we wait until we find elephants dying by waterholes before that happens.

So we are all switching to electric cars and the strange thing is that because of this we will need more electricity, bet the thirty million cars come before the new electricity supplies are in place.

We could use the new small but useful power supply in our houses produced every time a tap or water flow happens, just fit a small drive system to create enough electricity to charge electric cars.

Of course, it’s just an idea but so was the wheel until it was thought up by …….sorry they didn’t have names back then but I am pretty sure it was ‘growel’

I was sad to read that Edd Byrnes died on Thursday he was quite a cult figure not just in America but many other countries and like many other men and women who were teenagers at the time he was in 77 sunset strip it briefly sharpens the memories of those days.

You only get one chance in this life of being young and everyone should make the most of it. Don’t complain about what you haven’t got;  make the most of what you have got.

We did have the most amazing music then and to start with it all came from America before moving to Liverpool.

And Donald Trump.

Well, I heard a rumour that one young TV executive has seen the President boasting how he looks after his hair and is trying to sign him for a remake of the famous TV series 77 Sunset Strip but apparently he has trouble remembering the difficult lines which are Kookie Kookie Lend me your comb.

But I can’t get the image out of my mind of DJT reaching in his back pocket pulling out the comb and running it through his hair with Connie Stevens standing next to him.

Now Connie Stevens was something else,

I am in the process of putting a video on YouTube on How to grind drills.

Yes I know that it is a really exciting subject but I have been an engineer for sixty three years so it is one of the things I am quite good at,and bad at many more.

So whats that got to do with the centre of the earth. Well the centre of most things that spin are stationary,

And I also wonder if you got to the earths centre would the force of gravity be equal so that you floated as if you were in space. Well I suppose it would be just your ashes that floated.

Multi-tie is a way to secure plants and small shrubs to almost anything. It is extruded as a continuous length and cut to a five-metre roll its soft but strong plastic which will not damage plants.

It can be cut to any size and fixed to a trellis, supports, walls, almost anything using special clips’

Multi-Tie can be joined together if cut too short and can be used time after time.

I designed and started to manufacture this before I was forced to close my small business.

It’s a nice simple idea with great potential…so how about it.

Donald J Trump has announced that if he loses the presidency to Kanye West; in retaliation, he will become a rapper and will be the most famous one ever.

Look out for a lot of repetitive words in his rap, like ‘its fake news’  ‘I will never wear a mask’  masks are great,’ I’m a self-made man,’

Actually, the last sentence is quite profound because if you don’t exist how can you become a’ self-made man.’

If someone sends me a really nice bottle of red wine I may explain how providing I don’t drink the wine before the explanation.

Smart-Thread Innovative Fastening System 

So this is the Smart-Thread innovative fastening system. It’s unusual. But bear with me as I try to explain why and what it could be used for.

In each of these pictures, there are two stainless steel nuts in which the smaller diameter has a two-start left-hand thread and the larger diameter has a two-start right-hand thread. Inside this is an 8mm internal thread that locks items in place. One nut is in the middle of the picture the other is on the long fastener. Any inside thread can be used.

But what I really wanted was a seven-start thread which I was unable to get made in the UK or anywhere else at the moment, the alternative is the plastic nut and fastener along with a locking tool and an un-locking tool which have been 3d Printed.

You still don’t get why or how it works. The pictures below show one fastener (or more commonly known as a bolt) located in a locking tool, this is the larger plastic item. 

One fastener is located in an unlocking tool the smaller item.

So lets cut to the chase.

The locking tool spins in a clockwise direction and locks around the larger head of the nut or fastener in only about one-eighth of a turn and it is held in place and cannot fall off whatever position it is held in. The tool is used to lock the nut or fastener in position then the tool is spun in an anticlockwise direction and leaves the nut or fastener in place.

The unlocking tool is used to remove the nut or fastener, it is located on the smaller diameter and spins anticlockwise removing the nut or fastener which are retained in place and cannot fall off but can easily be removed by hand.

But what can it be used for and why is it different?

It has a broad base which means it securely locks items down.

Using threads to tighten it means a high level of torque is possible with very little wear.

It loads quickly on the locking tool and will not fall off so it is possible to fit in awkward positions and deep settings.

It can be fitted manually or using robotics, to; Automobiles, planes, trains, bikes, scooters, or anything.

If removal is not required it can be used in electronic circuits where only a small right-hand thread is required which again means it will not fall off and can be fitted, robotically, and in awkward positions.

What has happened to this country? I remember when I could go to Aston, Birmingham where Billy Snotts the old lathe turner with a permanent cold worked on a lathe driven by leather belts which required different cogs to be hand-fitted and he could produce all sorts of threads, especially after visiting the Dog and Patridge pub in Livery Street.

And you only needed to give him a drawing on the back of a woodbine packet.

OH, you tried to give him the woodbine packet before he went to the pub.

Now everything has to be on a disk or file and loaded into a machining center that cost £100000.00 and they still can’t turn a seven-start thread.

Billy is one hundred and six now but I may have to ask if he will do one last job; which may be difficult as he died when he was sixty-four. Still, it might be worth trying cause if you don’t ask you don’t get…

As a postscript after Billy died they buried his lathe with him,  I recon Billy turned in his grave.

It should then read, a long time ago 

It was when we started to take the NHS for granted and reduced the amount of money we invested in the system despite everyone but the politicians warning of the potential dangers this could produce.

So for too many years, it managed on a shoestring lurching from one crisis to another more patients waiting in A& E than it was able to treat not enough medical staff and wages that never reflected the stress and dedication that they applied to their profession.

Surely this couldn’t be because some politicians used private health services instead of the health service and were unaware of the problems, or perhaps saving money was more important than saving lives?

And now we have a shortage of PPE again this is something that has its roots in the past.

Go back to when we were great at designing and manufacturing in this country long before Japan, Taiwan, and China started to encroach on the UK market it changed when some owners of companies realised that if they bought from abroad at low prices and then sold on at higher prices they could make a fortune. To start with foreign products were of poor quality but they improved and gradually and over many years the UK manufacturing shrunk and all those small local companies closed because there was no need for them and all the skilled workers went into other trades, retired or died.

Most thought and said as did the NHS workers, that one day they would be needed and then it would be too late.

Now that all the world is after the same items that time has come and it’s too late.

While we have some extraordinary clever engineers we no longer have the capacity to produce the products that we once did.

There are some very innovative machines in factories now and some are faster and more accurate than humans and while at the moment they require programing this will change.

But there will come a day when a manager asks one of these machines to carry out a specific task and the machine turns around on its six-axis stand, stubs out the woodbine it was smoking on the back of a passing worker ignores the screams and says out the corner of his collet. ‘don’t worry mate I was leaving anyway. Then you know that your not part of this new world.

To be serious why do we not assess what is going to happen before it does.

I think I know the reason.
